Tree Restoration

Storm damaged trees can sometimes be restored rather than removed. Hurricane Juan left in its wake a vast number of trees in poor condition in Halifax and the surrounding area.  Although broken limbs are usually obvious, often there is structural damage to the tree that is difficult to see from the ground. Compression fractures can cause splits in limbs that run along the longitudinal axis, and can be very hard to see. These fractures accelerate decay and infestation and can cause limbs to fail unexpectedly.

Storm damaged trees are also stressed. By removing dead, diseased and broken limbs, the tree will be able to use its resources much more effectively to recover the healthy tissues (rather than spending good resources after bad). On severely damaged trees, rapidly-growing branches called 'sprouts' will often form in an effort to replace lost limb tissue. Although sprouts will help the tree to recover, they need to be properly managed or they will compete with each other. To help your tree to recover as quickly and efficiently as possible, many sprouts should be removed and the best sprouts should to be pruned to adjust their diameter and form. This will help to ensure adequate attachment and sound branch architecture, ensuring that your tree will recover from the storm damage.
